Nim’s Island

Published by Karen Kow under Movie Reviews

Starring Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler.

Nim’s Island tells the story of a young girl named Nim (Abigail Breslin). She lives on a beautiful island with her father Jack Rusoe (Gerard Butler), a research scientist studying microscopic marine organisms. Nim has a huge passion for books, especially the Alex Rover books. Jack is about to take Nim on a two day research trip looking for protozoa, but Nim begs to be left behind so she can help the hatching baby sea turtles. Jack reluctantly leaves Nim behind and sails out to sea.

While he is away, Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster) the author of the Rover books emails Jack to get his knowledge about volcanoes for her next book. Nim replies thinking he is the great adventurer Alex Rover. Everything goes well until a huge storm hits the island and Jack becomes lost at sea. Nim sends a letter to her literary hero pleading for help. Alexandra is agoraphobic and never leaves the house. She rarely even opens her front door. She also has a wild imagination, whereas her fictional character Alex Rover (also Gerard Butler) talks to her, mocks her, and gives her pep talks.

A huge disappointment. When I saw the trailer, I was quite exited to see this movie. Turned out to be ordinary and non amusing. Sigh!!!

The Life Before Her Eyes

Published by Karen Kow under Movie Reviews

Starring Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood.

life-before-her-eyes.png

By the end of the show, I was like, “So what was that all about??!”

I’ve got a feeling that young “Diana” (Evan Rachel Wood) was actually killed in the shooting. But her best friend Maureen (who was kept alive), to overcome her guilt decided to live the life “Diana” would have liked to live. Including changing her face and hair colour and naming her daughter “Emma” – the name young Diana chosen for her own daughter. So old Diana (Uma Thurman) is actually Maureen.

Now you’re going like… “huh???!!!!”

Nevertheless, that sounds rather far-fetched if I may say! This movie was Hollywood trying to be arty-farty. So that’s a deduction from MY imagination based on the the series of random flashbacks shown in the movie. Oh what the hell… I’m not bothered to watch it again.

I like Uma Thurman but this is not one of her better shows.

88 Minutes

Published by Karen Kow under Movie Reviews

Starring Al Pacino and some beautiful ladies.

88-minutes.png

Al Pacino is a Forensic Psychiatrist with the FBI and a college professor. He receives a threatening phone call giving him 88 minutes to live. The time in which he needs to use all his skills and training to narrow down the possible suspects, including a disgruntled student, a jilted former lover, and a serial killer already on death row.

Al Pacino is fantastic as usual! And this role is perfect for him. :)

Ben Campbell is a young, highly intelligent, student at M.I.T. in Boston who strives to succeed. Wanting a scholarship to transfer to Harvard School of Medicine with the desire to become a doctor, Ben learns that he cannot afford the $300,000 for the four to five years of school since he comes from a poor, working-class background. But one evening, Ben is introduced by his unorthodox math professor Micky Rosa into a small but secretive club of five students, Jill, Choi, Kianna, and Jimmy whom are being trained by Professor Rosa of the skill of card counting at blackjack.

Intrigued by the desire to make money, Ben joins his new friends on secret weekend trips to Las Vegas where, using their skills of code talk and hand signals, they have Ben make hundreds of thousands of dollars in winning blackjack at casino after casino. Ben only wants to make enough money for the tuition to Harvard and then back out.

Yeah right! It’s Hollywood movie and in Las Vegas!! It’s complicated! Hahaha… I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. I thought it was really intelligent and entertaining.

And I love Vegas!!! And there were so many shots of Vegas that are beautiful and takes your breath away. Like when they were landing, the view from the penthouse suite, everything magical! Instead of the “cheesy scenes” of Vegas like those in “What Happens In Vegas”, 21 captures the real essence of what it is like to BE IN Las Vegas. :D

What Happens In Vegas

Published by Karen Kow under Movie Reviews

Starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher.

It’s a story about two strangers awakening together to discover they’ve gotten married following a night of debauchery in Sin City, and one of them has won a huge jackpot after playing the other’s quarter. The newlyweds devise ever-escalating schemes to undermine each other and get their hands on the money – only to find themselves falling in love amid the mutual backstabbing.

For some reason, I didn’t enjoy the movie as much as I thought I would. I didn’t like Cameron Diaz nor Ashton Kutcher in this movie even though they were quite good in other movies. I would give it a miss unless I’m really, really bored and there’s no books to read, and nothing to do, and nothing else to watch :D
